Jensen’s Jewels

Diamond Jubilee Jewels

A rainy Tuesday evening turned into an evening of dripping diamonds, sumptuous truffles, sweet scents and Diamond Jubilee fabulousness with Georg Jensen and Harper’s Bazaar’s limited-edition Diamond Jubilee collection. We shook off our coats to be greeted with a special Diamond Jubilee champagne and were soon draped ear-to-wrist in pavé diamonds from Georg Jensen’s new collection.

The Georg Jensen store

Taking inspiration and movement from the original Regitze collection, the pendants, bracelets and earrings contain delicate pavé diamonds, crafted from 18 carat white gold and connected in circular forms.

Perfect Perfume

Frangipani Parfum, 50ml, £184

Finding the right perfume for your can be a tricky business and we were adamant (read: stubborn and set) in our scent choices until last night when our noses were whiffed into shape by Ormonde Jayne.

The London perfumer attended the Georg Jensen & Harper’s Bazaar Diamond Jubilee event at their Old Bond Street store (more on that soiree tomorrow) and their extensive scent display was what caught our eye in the first place. After hearing a bit about just how much goes into the right perfume, we felt slightly ashamed at our past of wandering through perfume halls in big department stores, picking the one which didn’t offend us the most. Natalie explained how the process works and then went through our current picks and what we tend to look for in a perfume. Our answer was quite floral, but not too sickly sweet.

The scents

Then we got to work. Smelling 3 at a time, we were allowed to go X-Factor stylee on the scent sticks with an ‘It’s a no from me’ to Sambac, but a ‘100% yes’ to Champaca. Natalie, the Ormonde Jayne perfume extraordinaire, then narrowed down our choices to two, working out which scents and notes sat better and which our dream perfume would end up being.

The scents

The result? Frangipani – which went onto our right wrist – and Champaca – which adorned the left. Immediately we were taken with the Champaca, but after more chatting to Natalie, who advised us to let it sit on the skin for around twenty minutes, we were hooked on the other. Making friends smell each wrist on the journey home, the all round winner was Frangipani. We even managed to work out a great candle scent (some perfumes are too strong for yourself but may be perfect for a room fragrance) and we came away smelling of roses with a Tolu candle.

Seeing Double

Alexandra Diez de Rivera

Life is full of unanswerable questions, such as: what came first – the chicken or the egg? (For that, we are undecided, but we hope it was a Fabergé egg.); if a tree falls in the forest and there is no one around to hear it, does it still make a sound?; and is the glass half full or half empty?

We may not be able to answer these questions for you, but we are here to hopefully help with a different one.

Alexandra Diez de Rivera

Where did our story begin? This is something Alexandra Diez de Rivera wants to challenge.

Embarking on a unique project in Shanghai in 2007, Diez de Rivera cames up with the idea of creating alternative portraits where more than the mere appearance of a subject is revealed. People appear in settings that share information about their personality and lifestyle and each photograph unfolds a different story tailored by the photographer for her subject. The line between real and surreal is merged through the use of digital skills and the viewer is left challenged as to where the real world ends and the story begins.

Alexandra Diez de Rivera

Long story short (‘scuse the pun), she repeats the people and animals in post-production to create a new story and make the portrait truly unique, truly special and a truly incredible gift.

A picture paints a thousand words. Encore!

Introducing Olivia

Sophie Silk Pyjamas

Coming home from evenings partying with friends, Olivia von Halle (designer of her eponymous label) would long to ditch her sky-high heels and constricting outfits for something glamorous enough to enjoy a late gin and tonic in before sliding off to bed. And so, inspired by the lounging pyjamas worn by Coco Chanel and her contemporaries in the Twenties, von Halle started work with her tailor to design the perfect pair of pyjamas.

Olivia von Halle Pyjamas

One year later, and returning to London from Shanghai with an order list that was longer than her legs (she’s stunning at 6”tall), she decided to launch the Olivia von Halle brand. And we’re lucky enough to have access to these super stunning lounging accessories.

Victoria & Tansy Pyjamas

Enjoy your G&Ts in style in the Namalee, Sophie, Tansy, Victoria or Mary styles. Cheers!

Turning Tables

Samsung SUR40

What’s better than an iPad? A giant iPad.

Ok, so it’s not exactly an iPad, but it’s pretty close. Half huge tablet, half boardroom table, the Samsung SUR40 is every man’s (and woman’s) technical dream. Coming with a 4 inch thick and 40 inch wide glass HD touchscreen – which is ten times tougher than standard glass – you could probably even use it as a desk (although we maybe wouldn’t advise resting your cup of tea on it). It’s easily used horizontally, or hung onto the wall and you can even customise the legs to your specifications.

The table’s PixelSense™ allows the display to recognise fingers, hands and objects placed on the screen, enabling vision-based interaction without the use of cameras. It can even read text placed face-down.

We could bore you with more specifications, but for now, we’re just going to sit back and let it sink in just how cool it is.

From £7,405.

Terry’s Tactics

Brigitte Bardot, Spain, 1971 by Terry O’Neill, £6,000

As London’s Alon Zakaim gallery in Mayfair gears up for Terry O’Neill’s exhibition of his iconic images (plus some previously unseen works) the photographer has admitted that he doesn’t rate Kate Moss or Kate Middleton. Speaking to the Telegraph, he let on that he wouldn’t want to photograph the Duchess of Cambridge. “Kate? Nah – I don’t think so. Why not? Because I don’t fancy her,” he tells Celia Walden.

Faye Dunaway, post-Oscars in 1976 by Terry O’Neill, £2,150

Only two of his subjects ever drifed into the relationship territory, those of Jean Shrimpton and Faye Dunaway and he is quick to dismiss the looks of today’s famous woman: “there were some great-looking women about then. Now…pfff… well there’s Angelina Jolie, but there aren’t many real stars left.”

Frank Sinatra with his stand-in and bodyguards in Miami, 1968 by Terry O’Neill, £7,800

The Rolling Stones on ABC TV in 1964 by Terry O’Neill, £1,850

Terry O’Neill’s Infamous exhibition will run from 1 May to 8 June 2012 at Alon Zakaim, 5-7 Dover Street, London, W1S 4LD.

Scrap Value

Have you ever wondered what happens to the scraps of your Birkin as it’s being made? Or what happens if – quelle horreur – something goes wrong in the bag-making process?

Petit h Pop-Up Book. Photo: Courtesy of Hermès Petit h Creative Lab

To answer those undoubtedly burning questions, we take you back to when we told you about the making of an Hermès scarf and Shortlist MODE editor Adrian Clark noticed the pile of untolerated printing process mistakes piled up in the corner of the Hermès atelier? Well it seems it’s not only the scarves which end up being recycled. For the last three years, Hermès have been working on a project named Petit h – a line of accessories made from upcycled scraps of their leathers.

In November last year, some 2,200 Petit h objects went on sale for three weeks in the New York flagship store as part of a tour which began in Paris 2010. But beware, the items once sold will never be replicated. Pascale Mussard, a sixth-generation of the Hermès family (who has nurtured Petit h), told Cathy Horyn of the NY Times that it was never her intention to create a permanent trove of objects – even if a customer seems willing to pay for them. The whole idea of Petit h was (and is) to find new and creative uses for the leftover scraps of leather and silk or defective china and crystal – not to simply turn out more products.

Face/Off

!QMS Medicosmetics Skin Spa

If you, like us – although we would rather not admit it – have been ever-so-slightly too overindulgent with the chocolates this Easter, book yourself in for a facial at !QMS Medicosmetics. It may not sound like the cure for too much chocolate but our skin was suffering from what can only be described as post-traumatic stress from sugar overload. One quick trip to Sloane Square and into the magical hands of Emelie (who did our oxygen hand treatment the last time we visited the skin spa) and we felt much better.

She started with a skin consultation to assess what our problems/worries/issues were and then went straight to work. Cleanse, tone, exfoliate, extract (grim – yet necessary) and then for the calming mask. We first experienced this with our oxygen hand treatment and this time it was even more exciting. The algae mask is the ultimate cooling, soothing treatment and hides nothing about your skin – we even had a show-and-tell with the dried mask to show where the problem areas were, and (this part we are proud to admit) lucky us, had no wrinkles.

Then came the oxygen treatment. Blasts of oxygen into the areas of the skin left us feeling refreshed, happy, calm and possibly a little too relaxed. Our facial lasted approximately 75 minutes – at least that is what we were told – we were too relaxed to notice/care and our skin is looking smoother, clearer, happier and generally better for having the facial.

To book your facial at !QMS Medicosmetics, please email us or call us on +44 (0) 845 224 2617.
