Have you ever wondered what happens to the scraps of your Birkin as it’s being made? Or what happens if – quelle horreur – something goes wrong in the bag-making process?

To answer those undoubtedly burning questions, we take you back to when we told you about the making of an Hermès scarf and Shortlist MODE editor Adrian Clark noticed the pile of untolerated printing process mistakes piled up in the corner of the Hermès atelier? Well it seems it’s not only the scarves which end up being recycled. For the last three years, Hermès have been working on a project named Petit h – a line of accessories made from upcycled scraps of their leathers.

In November last year, some 2,200 Petit h objects went on sale for three weeks in the New York flagship store as part of a tour which began in Paris 2010. But beware, the items once sold will never be replicated. Pascale Mussard, a sixth-generation of the Hermès family (who has nurtured Petit h), told Cathy Horyn of the NY Times that it was never her intention to create a permanent trove of objects – even if a customer seems willing to pay for them. The whole idea of Petit h was (and is) to find new and creative uses for the leftover scraps of leather and silk or defective china and crystal – not to simply turn out more products.

And our particular favourite is the crocodile coffee cup holder. A take-away Starbucks never looked so good!
